1. Social Opportunity:
We are all busy in our own way. Pick up the kids, drop them off, go to work, run errands, clean, cook, laundry, etc. Even if we are involved in social environment throughout the day, it's business or work related. More often than not these engagements are more forced than enjoyable. That's a different story when you walk into your fitness studio. Your friends (the ones you actually like) are there, waiting for you to enter the room. Your exercise class breaks off into groups and you spend most of the class catching up with your BFFs. 2. Accountability: As you are driving home from a long, busy day at work, you try to justify all the reasons you can allow yourself to skip class. "Well, I didn't have time to eat today"..."The trainer said active recovery days are essential"..."I'm too tired to stop by the studio"..."Then I have to change...and shower...to much work". As you go through your entire list of justifications, your friends text you. Suddenly, all those justifications seem like a cop-out. You feel energized by the fact that you cannot let down your friends. They will never let you off the hook for skipping out on them! 3. Motivation: As if the feeling to not let down your friends isn't enough, you want to win the daily challenge at the studio. Now you are more determined than ever to get your name up on that leader board. Or maybe you like to feel competitive, so you want to get in more reps than your partner. Any of those reasons are what keep you coming back for more. Slowly, overtime, you notice that exercising becomes a normal part of your routine. 4. Physical Benefits: Now that exercise is a normal part of your day, you start to notice those jeans and that dress you bought a month ago, are starting to look really big and baggy. Even your friends have started to say something about your body changes and a shopping spree. Now you have plenty justification to go shopping, and one more, now you have an entire group of girlfriends in your same situation. 5. Save time: Group exercise has become the leading form of exercise over recent years. Now you can spend just 30-45 minutes per day and get the same results as an hour plus exercising on your own. Our trainers at BEYOND FIT ensure each workout is designed to reach your max fat burning zone, every time! 6. Cut the Boredom: We've all been out on the gym floor on our own. How boring does the same old workout/trainer become after 2 weeks? Group exercise classes are different each time you walk in. Not only does the constant change of workout provide relief to your brain, but it also provides an element of confusion to your muscles. Muscle confusion is one of the key factors in physical transformations! The confusion also helps keep your metabolism revving up all day and night, and as you become a regular exerciser. 7. Learn Something New: We all get stuck in the same old same movements. Each trainer has a unique style of exercise. Some have different philosophies and most have different exercise backgrounds. Each class and instructor can provide you with different exercises you can take home and try when you can't make it to class. 8. Safety: Classes are lead by a trained instructor, so the likelihood of an injury is lower in a group setting, than on your in on the gym floor. Each of your movements are coached and watched by trained eyes, including those of your exercise buddies. You also are able to ask the trainer if you are moving right or when and what body part you are able to work on the following days of the week. Trainers will be able to provide you with an exercise guide that will allow your muscles to rest when needed. All of which increases your overall fitness levels in a shorter amount of time. 9. Work at your rate: Everyone has their own path to healthy living. Group exercise classes allow you to do the workout, at your own pace with exercises that work for your body on any given day. All classes should be designed so that everyone, no matter their fitness levels, leaves feeling like they got an amazing workout. 10. Build Long-lasting Friendships: Even if you don't know someone when you join a class, odds are you will find friends in each class you attend. If you come to the same classes, overtime the new faces will become a new set of friends. Friends that will hold you accountable to coming to class and sticking with your goals. What more could you ask for out of one group exercise class?! Friends who sweat together, stay together!

I can relate to what you said about accountability! Personally, I do much better at following through with my health and fitness goals when someone close to me is involved and can keep an eye on me. I've been looking for something to spice up my exercise routine and I thought group exercise might be fun due to the social aspect. Thanks for pointing out that it also shifts the accountability from just yourself to a group of others - I think this will really help me be more successful!

It's cool that you mention that exercising in a group helps you stay motivated to reach your goals. I want to lose 10 pounds before the end of the year, so I'm considering joining an exercise group. I'm going to look for a good gym in my area that offers group exercise classes.
